Lithuania Free University - Laisvasis universitetas (LUNI)

One year ago a group of activists started Free University(www.luni.lt), a non-formal communal initiative aimed at organizingindividuals and groups already actively participating in academic andthe social sphere, encouraging them to share their knowledge andexperiences in order to create alternatives to the established modelof education, motivation and discipline. The student movement began inspring, 2008; it was a protest movement against the higher educationreform which is currently being implemented throughout Europe. In abizarre situation, one side of the movement was backed by right-wingpoliticians, and the other side developed a situationist-likeeducation critique based on unorthodox marxist analysis. This radicalwing, “Students’ Resistance” started collaborating with “anarchija.lt”collective and went to establish the Free University. Lectures areorganized every thursday in Vilnius, different people get invited toshare their knowledges - scientists, artists, social activists, collectives and individuals. During this year the independent andself-managing “faculties” of Free University were opened in fourLithuanian cities and a radio broadcast at the local VilniusUniversity campus radio was set up. Free University is indispensableplace of free communication among individuals and groups withsometimes different interests, the radical self-education space whereeverything is gratis. Free University is nomadic and often changes themeeting space - from art galleries to underground spaces and reclaimedauditoriums of the Vilnius’ University.
