Lithuania Free University - Laisvasis universitetas (LUNI)

One year ago a group of activists started Free University
(www.luni.lt), a non-formal communal initiative aimed at organizing
individuals and groups already actively participating in academic and
the social sphere, encouraging them to share their knowledge and
experiences in order to create alternatives to the established model
of education, motivation and discipline. The student movement began in
spring, 2008; it was a protest movement against the higher education
reform which is currently being implemented throughout Europe. In a
bizarre situation, one side of the movement was backed by right-wing
politicians, and the other side developed a situationist-like
education critique based on unorthodox marxist analysis. This radical
wing, “Students’ Resistance” started collaborating with “anarchija.lt”
collective and went to establish the Free University. Lectures are
organized every thursday in Vilnius, different people get invited to
share their knowledges - scientists, artists, social activists,
collectives and individuals. During this year the independent and
self-managing “faculties” of Free University were opened in four
Lithuanian cities and a radio broadcast at the local Vilnius
University campus radio was set up. Free University is indispensable
place of free communication among individuals and groups with
sometimes different interests, the radical self-education space where
everything is gratis. Free University is nomadic and often changes the
meeting space - from art galleries to underground spaces and reclaimed
auditoriums of the Vilnius’ University.
